Baltit Fort, a centuries old building, stands tall overlooking the Hunza-Nagar Valley, in the shadow of Ultar peak. The fort, constructed in the Tibetan style, can be seen from the Karakoram Highway.

It remained the abode of the rulers of Hunza for around eight centuries, till 1974 when the state of Hunza was abolished and annexed with Pakistan.

The Baltit Fort is one of the most visited buildings of Pakistan, with tourists from within and outside the country coming in thousands every year to look at the marvelous mud, stone and wood structure.

It was abandoned after the Hunza State was abolished. Some of its glory was returned after the Aga Khan Cultural Service, Pakistan, took the responsibility to restore and open it for the public.

The fort got international fame after being covered on the TIME magazine’s cover.
